Fundamentals of HEC-RAS (Fall 2025-Online)
Each Wednesday from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM (PST), October 1 to November 5, 2025.
Our Fundamentals of HEC-RAS class is designed for beginner HEC-RAS users that want to learn how to use both 1D and 2D HEC-RAS modeling from the ground up. This course leads directly into our Advanced 2D HEC-RAS modeling class which students can register for separately or as part of a discounted two class package.
Join us for six 4-hour lecture sessions with hands on workshops completed during the week. Learn more about the content of this class under Additional Info or in the “Course Coverage” table below. Classes are recorded for those who miss the live sessions.

Fundamentals of HEC-RAS
This intensive 6-week workshop will instruct students on the use of HEC-RAS for one-dimensional and two-dimensional hydraulic modeling and is designed for new users of HEC-RAS or for those with limited experience or desiring a refresher. While this class is designed for beginners or those with minimal HEC-RAS experience, it will be taught with modern geospatial techniques with an emphasis on building and evaluating georeferenced models through RAS Mapper. The course will include an introduction to HEC-RAS and RAS Mapper, instruction on building both 1D and 2D models, overview of 1D and 2D steady and unsteady flow theory, troubleshooting and calibration. The use of the model is taught through hands-on exercises and real-world project examples.
Topics
The seminar includes lectures on:
· Introduction to HEC-RAS
· Intro to RAS Mapper
· Building a 1D Model
· Building a 2D Model
· 1D/2D and Steady/Unsteady Theory Fundamentals
· Intro to Initial and Boundary Conditions
· Intro to Computation Options
· Visualizing and Evaluating Results
· Troubleshooting and Calibration
Workshops
Workshops focus on giving students hands on experience with building and pre-processing the computational mesh, performing offline and inline 2D projects, and using the built-in feature RAS Mapper to spatially analyze results. The 5 workshops included in this class are:
· Creating a 1D Model
· Creating a 2D Model
· 1D Bridge Modeling
· Intro to 2D Bridge Modeling
· Intro to River Restoration
Who Should Attend
Consulting engineers, water resource planners and scientists, engineers employed by local, state, or federal government agencies. Participants should have some experience in floodplain hydrology and hydraulics, and open channel flow concepts. They should also be able to follow simple computer instructions.
